Afrofuturist Design: Learning From Nature to Build Liberated Futures

🌟 Our built environment reflects the values and biases of the societies that create it. For too long, systemic racism and exclusion have shaped these spaces, perpetuating inequity and oppression. The Afrofuturist Design Workshop invites participants to step into a visionary space where we can reimagine architecture, urban planning, and community design through the powerful lenses of Afrofuturism and biomimicry.

Afrofuturism offers a radical rethinking of the future, centering Black creativity, resilience, and innovation to imagine spaces that celebrate equity and liberation. Biomimicry provides a framework for designing in harmony with nature, emphasizing sustainability and regeneration. Together, these perspectives challenge us to design environments that are not only just but also alive with possibility.

This workshop is a unique opportunity for architects, planners, activists, and anyone committed to spatial justice and equity to:

  • Explore how Afrofuturism and biomimicry can inspire inclusive, sustainable designs.

  • Reimagine the potential of the built environment as a tool for liberation.

  • Engage in hands-on activities that connect imagination with practical action.

Join us to dream boldly, design purposefully, and create a future where our spaces reflect the values of equity, justice, and community.

Let’s build a world that doesn’t just sustain life but uplifts it.
